Natural Vegetative Reproduction

There are several methods of natural vegetative reproduction in plants, which includes :
  1. Stem tuber : tuberthat develops from the stem where food is stored. Stem tubers usually have buds, like potatoes and sweet potatoes
  2. Root tuber : tuber that develops from the roots where food is stored. In root tubers, there are no buds, and so the root tuber cannot be used as the reproductive organ. For instance, root tubers in dahlia flowers, radhishes and carrots.
  3. Bulb : the tuber that develops from overlapping leaves. For instance, the  bulbs of spanish onions. garlics, onons, lilies and gladiolus flowers.
  4. Live roots ( rhizome ) : stems that grow by creeping in soil and functions as food storage. Live roots are known to have nods, buds and on each node and leafs scales. Examples include ginger, turmeric, flower beads and weeds.
  5. Runner :stem that creep on the surface of the soil. New plants usually grow at the ends of the runner. New plants form roots in its place to form morenew runner, for instance the strawberry plant.
  6. Stolon : much like the runner, it creeps in soil. For instance, the purple nut sedge and other kinds of grass.
  7. Buds : buds that grow trom the steam of the main plant to become a new individual, for example bamboo, sugarcane and banana plant
  8. Wild buds : buds that grow from parts that are not from the main plant to form a new individual. Based on the location of grwth, reproduction from the buds can be categorised as :
  • Root buds : new individuals that are produced from buds that grow from the root. Examples include buds from the roots of breadfruit, starfruit, guava, and cerry
  • Leaf buds : new individuals from buds that grow from leaves. For intance, leaf buds on air plant/ miracle leaf
